Cronologia da terra média
A Terra-média possui diversos calendários e formas de contar o tempo, de acordo com a região ou raça. Abaixo as formas mais comuns:
Calendário de Imladris: os Elfos, devido à sua longevidade, contavam o tempo em um período chamado yén, que consistia de 144 Anos do Sol. Este yén era divido em 8.766 semanas de seis dias cada uma, chamadas de enquier. Eles também reconheciam o ano solar, que era chamado de coranar ("sol-ao redor") ou loa ("crescimento"). Em Valfenda o loa começava no quinócio de primavera e era divididos em seis meses ou estações:
tuilë – primavera – 54 dias
lairë – verão – 72 dias
yávië – outono – 54 dias
quellë – esvanecer – 54 dias
hrívë – inverno – 72 dias
coirë – ressurgir – 54 dias
Cinco outros dias, dois entre coirë e tuilë e três entre yávië e hrívë, ampliavam o calendário até 365 dias. Irregularidades era solucionada adicionando um três dias extra a cada 12 anos, exceto no último ano do yén.
Calendário de Númenor: o calendário adotado pelos Homens na Terra-média era chamado Registro dos Reis e bastante similar ao nosso próprio. Tinha uma semana de sete dias, um ano de 365 dias dividido em doze meses (astar) sendo dois com 30 dias e dois com 31 dias. Assim como no calendário da região norte, o ano Numenoriano começava no meio do inverno. Eles mantinham dois dias entre o fim de um ano e o início do próximo (mettarë e yestarë), mas reduziam os dias de meio do ano a um (loëndë, essencialemte adicionando os outros dois dias aos "meses longos" de meio de ano"). Anos bissextos tinham dois dias de meio de ano. Na Segunda e Terceira Erasm, os anos foram registrandos começando no início da Era.
Várias irregularidades ocorreram neste calendário, especialmente seguindo a Queda de Númenor. Em 2060 da Terceira Era, Mardil Voronwë revisou o calendário e a nova versão ficou conhecida como Registro dos Regentes. Todos os meses do Registro dos Regentes tinham 30 dias e existiam dois dias "extras" nos equinócios, tuilérë e yáviérë. Os cinco dias extras (os wquinócios, meio do verão e dois no meio do inverno) era feriados.
Em 3019 da Terceira Era o Reino Reunido adotou um Novo Registro, que começava no equinócio de primavera, como no calendário Élfico (de Valfenda). Os nomes dos meses do Registro estão em Quenya e são:
